Editorial Standards
Insurance In Focus exists to help people understand how UK insurance works. These standards explain how we choose topics, gather evidence, write, and correct our work. They apply to every format we publish: guides, explainers, reference, news, analysis, opinion, interviews, data and investigation.
Evidence before assertion
Material claims are supported by primary sources wherever possible, including:
- FCA publications and data
- Financial Ombudsman Service decisions and complaints data
- PRA and Bank of England publications
- Legislation and government consultations
- ABI data
- Insurer reports and policy documents
- Court judgments
- Directly attributable interviews
- Clearly documented original research
Plain English, technical accuracy
We preserve technical insurance terms where necessary but define them at first use. Simplification should never distort the meaning of policy wording, regulation or claims practice.
Clear separation of formats
Every page is visibly classified: news reports what happened, analysis explains significance, and opinion states the author’s argument. We do not blur these lines.
Visible sourcing and correction
Each substantive page includes a named author, a publication date, a substantive update date where relevant, a source list, and a correction mechanism. See our Corrections page.
Commercial independence
We do not allow insurer rankings, affiliate relationships or sponsorship to determine editorial conclusions. Sponsored material is clearly separated from independent coverage. See our Commercial Policy.
UK specificity
We distinguish between UK-wide regulation, Great Britain, England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland where the law, redress, compulsory insurance requirements or claims practice materially differ.
