Flood and storm cover in home insurance

Standard home policies cover storm damage but flood is separate, through Flood Re. Understand what is included and the excesses that shape a claim.

Storm damage is covered by virtually all UK home insurance, but flood cover needs closer checking. Both are among the most disruptive claims you can face, so it pays to know the limits and excesses before it happens.

Storm cover

Standard policies cover damage from storms and weather, including fallen trees, damaged roofs and water entering through storm damaged openings. Cosmetic or gradual wear is not covered, and a roof already in poor repair may not be.

Flood cover

Most policies include flood cover, but excesses can be high and some high risk homes rely on Flood Re, a scheme that keeps affordable flood insurance available. If you are in or near a flood zone, confirm flood is included and note any special excess before you buy.

What is excluded

Gradual damp, groundwater seepage and damage from poor maintenance are typically excluded. Storm and flood are sudden events, so the distinction matters. Read the wording alongside our explainer on exclusions.

After a storm or flood

Make safe, photograph the damage, and notify your insurer early. Our guide to making a claim sets out the steps, and if a valid claim is mishandled, our complaints guide explains what to do next.
