Making a claim well is mostly about speed and evidence. The steps below apply across home, motor, travel, landlord and business cover, with product-specific detail in each hub.
1. Check the policy and the deadline
Confirm the event is covered and note any time limit for notifying the insurer. Some policies require notice as soon as reasonably possible.
2. Notify the insurer
Call or use the claims portal. Have your policy number, the date and nature of the loss, and a clear account ready. If police or emergency services were involved, keep the reference numbers.
3. Gather evidence
- Photographs of the damage or loss.
- Receipts, valuations or proof of ownership for claimed items.
- Quotes or reports, for example a repairer’s estimate.
- Any correspondence with third parties.
4. Prevent further loss
Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to limit damage: make safe, dry out, secure the property. Reasonable steps are usually covered.
5. Track the claim
Keep a record of who you spoke to and when. Our explainer on how settlements work covers what happens next, and the complaints hub explains what to do if it goes wrong.
